I can’t believe its been nearly nine years since I lived in Seattle. I was really only a part time resident as I was there for only a few months and usually only from Monday through Friday for a work project. Because I normally headed home to Los Angeles for the weekend and during the week I worked late hours, I didn’t get to see much of the city outside of my daily commute from Seattle to Redmond. However, the occasional weekend I did stay in town, I was impressed by what I saw: a city that was as much green as it was brown, with more tall trees and bodies of water than concrete buildings. Its true, the city of Seattle can be a quite dreary for a number of months out of the year thanks to the rainy weather conditions, but those days when the sun comes out, Seattle is just gorgeous which nearly…nearly makes up for all of the other gray days. In fact I remember one of the first sunny days I experienced after months of winter weather. You would have thought it was a national holiday. From one day to the next, the offices cleared out. Suddenly I got nothing but voice mail recordings and Out of Office emails. They do take their sunny days quite seriously in Seattle and no deadline or conference call was going to get in the way of a sunny afternoon!
Unfortunately, my weekend trip coincided with the more typical weather patterns – gray, rainy and chilly. (Note: If you want to look like a tourist, do what I did and walk around with an umbrella. I think most of the locals are used to the rain and resulting bad hair so they just make due with hoods and hats to keep the rain at bay). It didn’t matter too much as I spent most of my days indoors at a Capoeira event, but the times I snuck out to do a bit of sight seeing, I was reminded of how nice Seattle can be. I will definitely have to plan a summer trip to do some further outdoor exploring.
