Avoid the Comfort Zone

Posted in Dreams
Nearly two years ago I got fed up with my job. I didn’t like the work, most people around me were equally unhappy, I had one of those classic horrible Los Angeles commutes and I just couldn’t see myself stuck at that job any longer.

So what did I do? I quit. Of course, I’m a bit too risk adverse to just walk into work the next day and shout from the elevator banks “I Quit! I’m Outta Here.”  Instead I started to plan my escape that would take just over 3 months to execute. Enough time to work out a round the world ticket, figure out what to do with my cat and my apartment and to collect my annual bonus.  It was a bit risky, but one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Fast forward to today. My job, while not perfect, is not so bad. The work is challenging, I’m learning about a new industry, I like most of the people I work with and my commute is a third of what it was at my previous job.  So everything is great, right? Well, not exactly.  The problem is the “not bad” syndrome. It is easy to get comfy in “not bad” land and never leave.

When I start to get a little too comfortable I have to remind my self that rarely do you discover your dreams living in the comfort zone. Sure – it happens occasionally, just like someone really does win the Mega Lotto, but really how often do you know that person? And don’t they always end up on some tragic “where did they go wrong” TV documentary?

So while I’m not going to stroll into the office tomorrow and hand in my two weeks notice, I do need to remember that there’s no faster way to kill goals and dreams than by settling for Not Bad.  For me that goal is to find a way to turn my love of travel and world cultures into a financially viable, location independent career. But that’s me…what about you? What is your goal? Your dream? That one thing that reminds you to shake things up from time to time and to not get sidetracked by the comfort zone?
